NCAPEC President Monica Hardy Whaley issued the following statement after learning of the passing of Ambassador Matt Matthews:
“Dear NCAPEC Members and Friends,
“It is with a very heavy heart that I share the sad news with you that Ambassador Matt J. Matthews, U.S. Ambassador to Brunei and former U.S. Senior Official for APEC, passed away yesterday after a short illness.
“Matt was a great champion for APEC and a good friend to NCAPEC – always finding time in his grueling travel schedule for NCAPEC events and briefings, adding a terrific sense of fun to our adventures in Chile, Papua New Guinea, New Zealand, Atlanta, New York, D.C. …and wherever else APEC, ABAC or NCAPEC meetings brought us all together. As a fellow native of the Pacific Northwest, we could nearly always twist his arm to include a stop in Seattle when he was on the West Coast.
“He was encyclopedic on the vast range of APEC trade and economic issues and a fierce advocate for United States interests in APEC. It is a real loss to the State Department and to all of us who worked with Matt.
“He will be greatly missed; may he rest in peace.”
